Kim Mattice Wanat is a performer, teacher and director. She founded Opera NUOVA in 1998 and has acted as the Artistic and Managing Director since its inception. She has produced and directed several of Opera NUOVA\u2019s productions including Bock & Harnick's Fiddler on the Roof, Smetana\u2019s The Bartered Bride, Offenbach\u2019s La P\u00e9richole, Britten\u2019s A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream, the Canadian Premi\u00e8re of Mark Adamo\u2019s Little Women and all of NUOVA\u2019s school touring productions, most notably, a Canada Council commissioned opera written by NUOVA alumnus Isaiah Bell entitled The Lives of Lesser Things; and Dean Burry\u2019s Isis and the Seven Scorpions & and The Brothers Grimm. She is presently an instructor at the University of Alberta in the drama department and regularly works as a clinician for voice and choral teachers and as a musical director for musical theatre productions. Her commitment to sharing her expertise with young singers, actors, teachers and choral directors has earned her extensive recognition including Global Edmonton Television\u2019s Woman of Vision Award, The City of Edmonton\u2019s Salute to Excellence in the Arts Award and The YWCA\u2019s Woman of Distinction in Arts and Culture Award.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\t\t\n\t\t<\/path><\/svg>\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t

Benjamin W. Smith (he\/him) is a bi-lingual theatre-maker, educator, and artistic leader from Fredericton, New Brunswick \/ W\u0259last\u0259kwewiyik. Primarily a director, Benjamin is also a producer, performer, violence designer\/fight director, and intimacy coordinator. For the past 10 years, he has worked with theatres and cultural organizations across Canada including, Theatre New Brunswick (TNB), The New Brunswick Drama Festival, NotaBale Acts Summer Theatre Festival, the Edmonton International Fringe Festival, and Studio Theatre.<\/p>\n

He is the founding artistic director of Impulse Productions, an independent project-based theatre company, and is currently an instructor in the Department of Theatre at MacEwan University. Ben holds an MFA in directing from the University of Alberta and a BA with Honours from St. Thomas University, where he became the first student to propose and graduate with an interdisciplinary degree in artistic direction, creating and completing a sold-out director's thesis in the provincial capital. He is a certified member of the Academy of Fight Directors Canada, recognized in various weapon styles and disciplines, and has also trained with Theatrical Intimacy Educators based in Nashville, TN to integrate trauma-informed practices into their approach.<\/p>\n

Since 2020, Ben has collaborated with Broadway\u2019s Tony LePage and Justin Matthew Sargent on the development of a new musical entitled, Sweet Dreams. The musical is a comedic, modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare\u2019s A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream, set to the timeless music of Air Supply. He has been artist-in-residence at Theatre New Brunswick and the Fredericton Playhouse Inc.<\/p>\n

Lisa Kotelniski (She\/Her) is the Artistic Administrator and Marketing Manager at NUOVA Vocal Arts. A multidisciplinary artist based in Edmonton, she is a graduate of MacEwan University\u2019s BFA in Music Theatre Performance program. Alongside her administrative leadership, Lisa has an active creative practice as a performer, choreographer, and collaborator, with credits spanning musical theatre and new works development. Mitchell Norenberg (he\/him) is a historian, traveler, tea enthusiast, and bon vivant. He is currently\u00a0pursuing his Masters in History at the University of Alberta and has already received his Library and Information Technology diploma from MacEwan University in 2019 followed by his Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History from the same institution in 2022. During his time at MacEwan, Mitchell's executive leadership skills in volunteer cultural settings were enhanced as President for the History and Classics Club and as the Executive Treasurer for the InQueeries gay-straight alliance. His time in these roles reaffirmed his belief and commitment towards letting and supporting people thrive through openly being able to live as their genuine selves. Aside from NUOVA, Mitchell is the Coordinator for the Edmonton Historical Board (EHB), an advisory board to City Council, helping to encourage, promote and advocate for the preservation and safeguarding of historical properties, resources, communities, and documentary heritage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\t\t\n\t\t<\/path><\/svg>\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t

American soprano Helen Hassinger\u2019s recent stage appearances include Donna Anna in\u00a0Don Giovanni\u00a0<\/em>(Chautauqua Opera), Fiordiligi in\u00a0Cos\u00ec fan tutte\u00a0<\/em>(Opera Memphis), Ninfa in\u00a0L\u2019Orfeo<\/em>\u00a0(Chautauqua Opera),\u00a0<\/em>Phebe in\u00a0Whaling Women\u00a0<\/em>(Seaglass Theatre), M\u00e9lisande in\u00a0Pell\u00e9as et M\u00e9lisande\u00a0<\/em>(Boston University Opera Institute), and Helena in\u00a0A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em>\u00a0(BUOI).\u00a0\u00a0Concert\u00a0work includes appearances as the soprano soloist in Beethoven\u2019s\u00a0Symphony No. 9\u00a0<\/em>(Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra), Beethoven's\u00a0Missa solemnis<\/em>\u00a0(Choral Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania), and Brahms\u2019\u00a0Ein deutsches Requiem<\/em>\u00a0(Brookline Chancel Choir).\u00a0\u00a0She is a frequent guest soloist with the Albert Symphony Orchestra, the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra (A Night at the Opera, Symphony at the Snell), Calgary Opera (Arias + Ales,\u00a0Carmen<\/em>), and Edmonton Opera (Opera Al Fresco).\u00a0\u00a0Ms. Hassinger was a semi-finalist in the 2022 Opera Tampa D\u2019Angelo Vocal Competition and was awarded third place in both the 2022 International Grand Prix Competition and the 2021 Clara Schumann Competition.\u00a0\u00a0Most recently, she appeared on the CBC cheering on the Edmonton Oilers in Edmonton Opera\u2019s viral rendition of \u201cLa Bamba!\u201d<\/p>\n

Virginia Briggs is a second year student at the University of British Columbia\u2019s Sauder School of Business in Vancouver, where she is deepening her interest in the music industry through her classroom learning, internships and experience as a musician.\u00a0Virginia is happy to contribute to the NUOVA Vocal Arts board, bringing the unique perspective of a university business student and singer herself. Peter Flynn is a retired engineer, executive, and academic based in Edmonton. He holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta and held senior leadership roles in Canada\u2019s energy sector, including president positions at CNG Fuel Systems and Corod Industries. He later returned to the University of Alberta as the Poole Chair in Management for Engineers, where he advanced education in engineering management and energy economics. Flynn has also contributed extensively through board service across corporate and non-profit sectors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\n\t\t\n\t\t<\/path><\/svg>\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t

Elliot Harder is a performer who has been studying and performing opera across Canada for over a decade. He received a Bachelor of Music from UBC in 2015 and a Master of Music from McGill in 2020. His time at these institutions and out in the professional world has provided him a rich education into the history of this wonderful artform, as well as insight into its evolving future. As a performer he is drawn to this music for the way it magnifies and stretches moments in life that are often seen as fleeting, and finds it so compelling to explore these moments and try to understand them. He has recently appeared with Edmonton Opera, Pop Goes the Opera, and Good Mess Opera Theatre.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Outside of his performance work, Elliot has experience as a theatre technician, event coordinator, barista, and mixologist. Alyssa Zukwiski graduated with honors from the School of Hope in Vermillion, Alberta in 2021 and is currently working within the education system as part of the custodial staff. She is currently working towards her level one in early childhood education and is planning to do her schooling in the occupational health and safety sector at the University of Alberta. She is involved in her local town as she is a board member of the Vegreville Regional Historical Society where they work to preserve the stories, artifacts, and buildings of old Vegreville. In addition to this, she is going to be a part of the upcoming SOARING project (Strengthening Opportunities for Adolescent Resilience, Inclusion and Growth) that is funded by the Alberta Health Services, which provides the opportunity for youth to come together and create a local program that will address barriers of living safe, active, and healthy lives. She founded Opera NUOVA in 1998 and has acted as the Artistic and Managing Director since its inception. She has produced and directed several of Opera NUOVA\u2019s productions including Bock & Harnick’s Fiddler on the Roof, Smetana\u2019s The Bartered Bride, Offenbach\u2019s La P\u00e9richole, Britten\u2019s A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream, the Canadian Premi\u00e8re of Mark Adamo\u2019s Little Women and all of NUOVA\u2019s school touring productions, most notably, a Canada Council commissioned opera written by NUOVA alumnus Isaiah Bell entitled The Lives of Lesser Things; and Dean Burry\u2019s Isis and the Seven Scorpions & and The Brothers Grimm. She is presently an instructor at the University of Alberta in the drama department and regularly works as a clinician for voice and choral teachers and as a musical director for musical theatre productions. Her commitment to sharing her expertise with young singers, actors, teachers and choral directors has earned her extensive recognition including Global Edmonton Television\u2019s Woman of Vision Award, The City of Edmonton\u2019s Salute to Excellence in the Arts Award and The YWCA\u2019s Woman of Distinction in Arts and Culture Award. Smith (he\/him) is a bi-lingual theatre-maker, educator, and artistic leader from Fredericton, New Brunswick \/ W\u0259last\u0259kwewiyik. Primarily a director, Benjamin is also a producer, performer, violence designer\/fight director, and intimacy coordinator. For the past 10 years, he has worked with theatres and cultural organizations across Canada including, Theatre New Brunswick (TNB), The New Brunswick Drama Festival, NotaBale Acts Summer Theatre Festival, the Edmonton International Fringe Festival, and Studio Theatre. He is the founding artistic director of Impulse Productions, an independent project-based theatre company, and is currently an instructor in the Department of Theatre at MacEwan University. Ben holds an MFA in directing from the University of Alberta and a BA with Honours from St. Thomas University, where he became the first student to propose and graduate with an interdisciplinary degree in artistic direction, creating and completing a sold-out director’s thesis in the provincial capital. He is a certified member of the Academy of Fight Directors Canada, recognized in various weapon styles and disciplines, and has also trained with Theatrical Intimacy Educators based in Nashville, TN to integrate trauma-informed practices into their approach. Staff Members Kim Mattice Wanat Artistic & Managing Director: Founder of NUOVA Vocal Arts Kim Mattice Wanat is a performer, teacher and director. She founded Opera NUOVA in 1998 and has acted as the Artistic and Managing Director since its inception. She has produced and directed several of Opera NUOVA\u2019s productions including Bock & Harnick’s Fiddler on the Roof, Smetana\u2019s The Bartered Bride, Offenbach\u2019s La P\u00e9richole, Britten\u2019s A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream, the Canadian Premi\u00e8re of Mark Adamo\u2019s Little Women and all of NUOVA\u2019s school touring productions, most notably, a Canada Council commissioned opera written by NUOVA alumnus Isaiah Bell entitled The Lives of Lesser Things; and Dean Burry\u2019s Isis and the Seven Scorpions & and The Brothers Grimm. She is presently an instructor at the University of Alberta in the drama department and regularly works as a clinician for voice and choral teachers and as a musical director for musical theatre productions. Her commitment to sharing her expertise with young singers, actors, teachers and choral directors has earned her extensive recognition including Global Edmonton Television\u2019s Woman of Vision Award, The City of Edmonton\u2019s Salute to Excellence in the Arts Award and The YWCA\u2019s Woman of Distinction in Arts and Culture Award. Read Bio Benjamin Smith Associate Artistic Director & Operations Manager Benjamin W. Smith (he\/him) is a bi-lingual theatre-maker, educator, and artistic leader from Fredericton, New Brunswick \/ W\u0259last\u0259kwewiyik. Primarily a director, Benjamin is also a producer, performer, violence designer\/fight director, and intimacy coordinator. For the past 10 years, he has worked with theatres and cultural organizations across Canada including, Theatre New Brunswick (TNB), The New Brunswick Drama Festival, NotaBale Acts Summer Theatre Festival, the Edmonton International Fringe Festival, and Studio Theatre. He is the founding artistic director of Impulse Productions, an independent project-based theatre company, and is currently an instructor in the Department of Theatre at MacEwan University. Ben holds an MFA in directing from the University of Alberta and a BA with Honours from St. Thomas University, where he became the first student to propose and graduate with an interdisciplinary degree in artistic direction, creating and completing a sold-out director’s thesis in the provincial capital. He is a certified member of the Academy of Fight Directors Canada, recognized in various weapon styles and disciplines, and has also trained with Theatrical Intimacy Educators based in Nashville, TN to integrate trauma-informed practices into their approach. Since 2020, Ben has collaborated with Broadway\u2019s Tony LePage and Justin Matthew Sargent on the development of a new musical entitled, Sweet Dreams. The musical is a comedic, modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare\u2019s A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream, set to the timeless music of Air Supply. He has been artist-in-residence at Theatre New Brunswick and the Fredericton Playhouse Inc. Recent directing credits include: Indecent (Studio Theatre), Something Rotten! (Grant MacEwan University), East of Berlin (University of Alberta), The 39 Steps (Bleviss Laboratory Theatre), Tough! Read Bio Lisa Kotelniski Artistic Administrator &Marketing Manager Lisa Kotelniski (She\/Her) is the Artistic Administrator and Marketing Manager at NUOVA Vocal Arts. A multidisciplinary artist based in Edmonton, she is a graduate of MacEwan University\u2019s BFA in Music Theatre Performance program. Alongside her administrative leadership, Lisa has an active creative practice as a performer, choreographer, and collaborator, with credits spanning musical theatre and new works development. Her combined experience in performance and arts marketing informs her work supporting emerging artists and shaping NUOVA\u2019s public presence. She is looking forward to be part of Nuova Vocal Arts.\u00a0 Read Bio Mitchell Norenberg Vice President Mitchell Norenberg (he\/him) is a historian, traveler, tea enthusiast, and bon vivant. He is currently\u00a0pursuing his Masters in History at the University of Alberta and has already received his Library and Information Technology diploma from MacEwan University in 2019 followed by his Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in History from the same institution in 2022. During his time at MacEwan, Mitchell’s executive leadership skills in volunteer cultural settings were enhanced as President for the History and Classics Club and as the Executive Treasurer for the InQueeries gay-straight alliance. His time in these roles reaffirmed his belief and commitment towards letting and supporting people thrive through openly being able to live as their genuine selves. Aside from NUOVA, Mitchell is the Coordinator for the Edmonton Historical Board (EHB), an advisory board to City Council, helping to encourage, promote and advocate for the preservation and safeguarding of historical properties, resources, communities, and documentary heritage.
